Debra Yoo / Still Lifes

I make very deliberate choices in the process of setting up a still life, selecting objects that will flesh out visual relationships that have already begun in an intuitive form. I find my motivation in patterns and colors that are initially seductive, but the composition that supports them and the light that places them in the real world grow in importance as I work through the painting. Still lives are a delight to me. They can embody the purely sensuous pleasure of our surroundings and our ability to make visual connections, or be as charged with meaning as the greatest narrative art. Still lifes remind me of the joys of being human.
